একদা এক গ্রীষ্মের দিনে একজন গরিব টুপি-বিক্রেতা মেলায় যাচ্ছিলেন টুপি বিক্রি করবার জন্য। ক্লান্ত হয়ে তিনি একটা গাছের ছায়ায় বসলেন টুপি ভর্তি ঝুড়িটি পেছনে রেখে। মৃদুমন্দ বাতাস তাকে তন্দ্রাচ্ছন্ন করেছিল এবং শীঘ্রই তিনি ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছিলেন। কিছুক্ষণ পরে হঠাৎ তিনি জেগে উঠলেন এবং অবাক হয়ে দেখলেন যে তার ঝুড়িতে একটিও টুপি অবশিষ্ট নেই। তখন তিনি কাঁদতে লাগলেন।
